Sandwiched between the islands of Utila and Guanaja, the Roatan Island is a holidayer’s absolute paradise. The picturesque island expands over a length of 77 km or 48 miles. If you’re visiting the Western Caribbean, Roatan Island is just the place to be. It’s interesting to note that this island is the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea, and the second-largest in the world. Travelers from all across the world visit this island to enjoy seeing the coral reef, a rich marine life and indulging in a wide range of fun-filled adventure sports.

The mainland was once home to cultures like the Paya, the Maya and the Lenca among others. During your visit to the Roatan Island, you’ll also come across towns including Coxen Hole, Gravel Bay, Flowers Bay, Sand Bay, West End etc.

Coxen Hole is the most populous of all towns. It’s also the place where you’ll find the airport, along with stores, restaurants and banks. If you are in search of some good restaurants and places of accommodation, you can head straight to either West Bay or West End.

Things to See in Roatan
Though the Roatan Island is mainly suited for adventure lovers, it also welcomes those who are interested in sightseeing tours. Cameo Factory, Carambola Gardens, Caves of Helene, Marine Science Museum, Roatan Butterfly Garden and the Marine Park are some of the most popular places to see. The Dolphin Show at Anthony’s Key Resort is also a major crowd-puller.

While spending your holidays on the Roatan Island, it’s a good idea to set out on a village tour. The Garifuna Village Tour (Punta Gorda) is quite popular with tourists from all around. The beautiful tiny hamlet of Oak Ridge is also a great place to enjoy a walking tour. Here, you’ll feast your eyes on very colorful wooden houses, supported by stilts, erected along the sea shore.

Things to Do in Roatan
Adventure sports are the biggest attraction on Roatan Island. Whether you’re traveling alone or with family and friends, you’ll find ample options to quench your thirst for thrill and adventure while having great fun.

Scuba diving the most popular adventure sport at Roatan. To enjoy this exciting sport, you’ll need to get in touch with any of the several dive shops that are scattered all across the island. Coconut Tree Divers, Roatan Divers, Barefoot Divers and Splash Inn Dive Shop are some of the best dive shops you can go to. These dive shops arrange scuba diving for both beginners and professionals.

Apart from Scuba diving, you can also go on fishing and boat charter tours during your stay in Roatan. If diving with Dolphins is what excites you much, you should go to Anthony’s Key Resort. Depending on your individual choices and preferences, you can choose to indulge in deep sea fishing, diving, snorkeling or simply enjoy a boat trip to a nearby island. Apart from these, the Roatan Island is also quite well-known for its 18-hole golf course – Black Pearl.

Horse riding along the beach at West End is yet another activity that visitors to Roatan like a lot.

While on your tour to the Roatan Island, you can also spend some time buying a variety of souvenirs to take back home. West End is a good place to buy stuff like jewelry, pottery, wood carvings, t-shirts, sunglasses, hats etc.
